Herdling

The game invites players to “head out on a grand alpine expedition with a herd of loveable beasts, as you ascend a mountain path, encounter eerie dangers and surprising obstacles, and forge your way to the mystery at the summit”.

While set in a fictional environment and featuring fictional creatures, the gameplay primarily revolves around the ideas of slowness and bonding with virtual animal creatures, i.e. developing a sense of stewardship for their wellbeing and acknowledging their (simulated) individuality. Moreover, the game arguably re-enacts the “agential mode” (Nguyen) of herding, which has (or had) been a formative practice for earlier humans for centuries, i.e. allowing players to ‘role-play’ and develop an intuition for this often marginalized epistemic practice.
