Forest Shuffle

    Over the course of the game, each player grows a forest by placing different tree species and arranging other plants, animals, and fungi around them. The game ends once three “winter” cards are drawn, signifying the end of the growing season. At that point, the most ecologically “successful” forest wins.

At the core, Forest Shuffle is a tableau-building system structured around trees as habitats. Tree cards act as anchors within each player’s forest; additional species occupy specific positions on them. The species cards are split vertically or horizontally and can be used in different ways to make ecologically meaningful contributions to the tableau, or, in other words, score the most points. This creates a layered spatial puzzle in which placement decisions determine how effectively different elements of the forest interact.

Scoring emerges from relationships among the various species. Some animals benefit from the presence of particular tree types; others benefit from forest diversity, while certain plants and fungi gain value when grouped or paired. As a result, players are encouraged to construct ecosystems in which different components reinforce one another, reflecting the interdependent nature of an ecosystem, rather than simple accumulation.

There is no direct interaction between players, but they can indirectly influence each other’s opportunities by drawing from a shared pool of cards, as well as being able to draw previously discarded cards. This introduces a dynamic in which decisions about what to discard are not only a matter of hand management, but also about allowing or denying an opponent’s forest to develop, reinforcing the idea of limited ecological resources within a broader system.

Forest Shuffle is a thoughtful attempt to present ecology as a network of relationships shaped by spatial constraints and resource availability. You need to build a foundation of trees as habitats for other plants and animals, which in turn interact to enrich the ecosystem. The game emphasises how value emerges from balance, diversity, and careful integration, framing the forest as a tightly interconnected system.
